Friends of Mrs. Effie Clark, a
former resident of Dayton, will
be interested in knowing that
she is recovering from a heart at-
tack she suffered on Feb. 9. She
is now at Emanuel Hospital in
Portland, but will soon be ready
for an extended care facility, ac-
cording to her sister, Mrs. Olive
Means.
Rev. Clair Lund, missionary to
the Southwest Indian School in
Arizona, was a speaker at the
morning service of the Dayton
Pioneer Evangelical Church last
Sunday. His wife, who was unable
to accompany him, is a grand-
daughter of the late Ray. and
Mrs. F. E. Fisher, who were for-
mer residents of Dayton when he
pastored the Evangelical Church
here.
Recent visitors at the home of
Mrs. Mildred Willson were her
brother, Mr. and Mrs. Corwin
Betts from Garden City, Kansas.
They also visited a nephew in
Portland .and a niece and family
in Salem before going to Califor-
nia.
LAFAYETTE
By PEGGY WISE -- 8~I~231~
I was very sorry to hear about
the illness of Paul Capron who
was our policeman, Boy's Club or-
ganizer, friend to young and old
alike, for about a year. Paul was
found unconscious and taken to
the Harney County Hospital in
Burns, then transferred to the St.
Charles Hospital in Bend where
he was kept for treatment for a
bleeding ulcer until Tuesday,
Feb. 19. A group hear in town
are collecting some money to
help Paul pay his bills. Jars are
placed in the local stores and
money will be accepted at the
city hall from anyone who wish-
es to contribute. It seems Paul
had organized boys groups in
Hines like he did here and these
people are busy with food sales
to pay some of his expenses. A
bake sale on Saturday will be
held at the Lafayette city hall to
raise more funds.
Ann Zeren and Margaret Mock
worked in McMinnville Wednes-
day, Feb. 23 +at the Cancer Test
that was sponsored by the Cancer
Society. The Pap test was publi-
cized by the Home Extension
groups and many of the volun-
teers were obtained from these
groups throughout the county.
The tests were well attended and
they even had to turn away some
people.
Ken and Julia Ann Bauer went
to Washington over the weekend
and dipped smelt with great suc-
cess. There was a 40 lb. per per-
son limit and the smelt were
really plentiful -- just had to
stick the net in the river and it
was full.
The Lafayette Rebeccas met
last week and are starting a pap-
er drive to raise money. They
will take newspapers, magazines
and even cardboard boxes (cut
up and flatened). Newspapers and
magazines should be kept in sep-
arate bundles, Please call 864-
2389, Lafayette, for someone to
pick up your papers.
Visitors at the home of Blanche
Williamson on Saturday were
Mrs. Nan HolFmgsworth and Carl
Cramer of Vancouver, Wn. Mrs.
Ruth Lee of Lebanon stopped by
and had lunch with Blanche on
Tuesday. Blanche's daughter,
Vickie Calcagno, had guests Dick
Willismson and Judy Punzel of
Dallas and Blanche for ~ small
birthday gathering for Vickie's
husband, Darrol. Vickie entered
the hospital n Tualatin for sur-
gery Thursday, Feb. 28.
Dale and Dabble Hodgins were
weekend visitors at the home of
areal and June Hodgins.
City Court was held at the City
Hall Thursday, Feb. 21, with
Judge Allyn Brown of Newberg
presiding. Two cases were dis-
posed of: R. A. BoRon of New-
borg was found guilty on two
counts: no operators license,
fined $17 and careless driving,
fined .$30. T. S. Babbit was cited
for having only a California driv-
ers license, having been in Ore-
gon over time allowed out of
state license. Charges were dis-
missed.
A real problem all over our
town and all over the county too
it seems is dogs running at large.
Lafayete has an ordinance prohib-
iting dogs running at large. This
means absence of restraint as
shall permit it to go or run upon
the public streets or other public
property within the city or upon
any privately owned premises
other than those owned or occu-
pied by the owner of the dog.
There will be concentrated effort
to enforce this ordinance and it
would help if all citizens would
give this matter their attention.
It is likewise unlawful to permit
a female dog in heat to run at
large.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stanley's
daughter Janice was home for a
visit fro~ Portland, where she
is attending college.
UNIONVALE
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ediger and
Heidi enjoyed a trip to Canada,
Feb. 16 to 19. They visited Mr.
and Mrs. Edwin Gingerieh of
Vanderhoof, British Columbia,
which is close to the Alaskan
border. They attended the Men-
nonite Church with them on Sun-
day. They were also guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Gus Schlampe and
family, also of Vanderhoof. On
their return trip, they visited
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Dick and fam-
ily of Vancouver, B.C. The roads
were snow covered but passable
with their camper truck, and the
weather mild. Mr. and Mrs. A. W.
Ediger of Keizer looked after
the home in their absence.
Mrs. May Rickey, Mrs. F. C.
Stockhoff and Gene Stockhoff
were among those who attended
the Sweetheart Banquet at the
Kings Table Saturday evening,
with a large group of members
and friends of the Unionvale and
Hopewell Community Churches.
Mrs. Frank Murphey attended
the 50th wedding anniversary re-
caption in honor of Mr. and Mrs.
E. W. Mandigo at the Trinity Lu-
theran Church in McMinnville
Sunday afternoon. There was a
large attendance at the reception.
Mrs. Murphey called on Mrs. Eth-
el Scoggan of Lafayette on her
way home.
