/ Pastor's Corner Dear Pastor Skip, What does I Peter 4:8 really mean. 1 thought that only Jesus" blood could cleanse us from our sin7 First Peter 4:8 says "Above all keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins." At first glance this might be understood to be saying if I love somebody my sins will be forgiven. But as we look at other scripture verses we see that only by the shed blood of Jesus can sins be forgiven (Mt. 26:28; Rm= 3:25; Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:20). Therefore a person cannot say, "I may be sinfiing but that's okay since 1 also am loving." To help us understand this verse we need to see what Peter has previously written in this letter. Peter has a4~dy warned them that persecutions would be ~ ...... olpJeng their way and he instructs them on what to do when they are sinned against. He used Jesus as the example: "Who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in his mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges right- eously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to right- eousness; for by his wounds you were healed" (I Peter 2:22-24). So as Peter continues his letter he is instructing his readers on their attitude when they are sinned against. I believe I Pt. 4:8 says that the person with this attitude of love will forgive another brother over and over again. The sins that are covered are the ones belonging to the one loved not the one who is loving. We are always to love a person regardless of his faults and his unloving acts towards us. Free apple trees part of membership The National Arbor Day Foundation is giving two free apple trees to all new Foundation members joining during March, 1982. A red delicious apple tree and a yellow delicious apple tree are being given by the Foundation to help its new members fight the high cost of living by planting "edible landscapes." The free trees are part of the Foundation's effort to promote tree planting during 1982, the 100th anni- versary of the first observance of Arbor Day in schools. The National Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is working to improve the quality of life throughout the country by encouraging tree planting. The Foundation will give the two free apple trees to new members contributing $5.00 or more during March. The trees will be 18 to 24 inches tall and will be sent postage paid with enclosed planting and care instruc- tions at an appropriate time for planting this spring. They are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free by the Foundation. "Arbor Day's founder, J. Sterling Morton, em- phasized the value of planting fruit trees. So it is most appropriate that our new members receive free apple trees during this centennial year," a Foundation representative said. To become a member of the Foundation, and to receive the free trees, a $5.00 membership contribution should be sent to FREE APPLE TREES, National Arbor Day Foundation, Arbor Lodge 100, Nebraska City, NE 6841O.
