What a Difference
A Degree Day Makes
A unit ()1 measurernent that is becoming
fn()rc and mr)re important t() everyone as
cncrgv bcf()nlcs ill()re expensive is a term
c,tllcd a tlegrec day. it is used to measure
heating requirements and is determined by
striking an ,tverage of the high and low ()tit-
side tcmpcr,ttt|res for ,t particular day and
st,htr,tcting that nt,n.lbcr from 65 degrees.
Vh,lt you hope fi)r is th,tt there will bc zero
dcgrcc days in a day. but that's a wintertime
imp()ssihility. Icy January. lor example, with
31 days, had 1(tSH degree days; Fcbruar);
with ()nh 2H days, and s()mewhat milder,
had G I "5 dcgrcc days. Boiled down, tile more

Shoot It--Strip It
While the Weather's Warm
It's (luitc c;tsv for homeoveners to forget the
whistling winds of winter and the icy grip
t)f last January
when the spring
un shines and the
[ / trees begin to bud ,)tit. But
/ /' - now, when it is warm, is actually
the best time to break out your
caulking gun and seal tile heat-leaking, air-
entering cracks around windows and doors.
~b,ltherstrip. too, while you're in the mood.
N()xv is the time, r:lther than conducting a
crash progranl next fall. The job is quite
simple and the rn,iterials are not expensive.
For c()mfort's sake and fi)r savings in energy
and m()nev, a Saturday now in your T-shirt is
sure hotter than working with cold fingers
in the fall.
