Phone rate increase
delayed by PUC order
Public Utility Commissioner John Lohdell has sus-
pended a request by Continental Telephone Co. of the
Northwest to increase local phone rates in its Oregon
service areas.
The suspension, which lasts for up to six months, will
allow the PUC staff time to investigate the rea-
sonableness of the request to increase annual company
revenues by $1,920,661, or 16 percent.
In March, Continental asked permission to increase
local residential and business rates by varying amounts
for customers in service areas including Silverton,
Yamhill, Sunnyside, Detroit, Dayton, Aumsville and
Murphy.
Phone rental charges would also increase by 25 cents
for rotary phones and 40 cents for TouchcaU phones
under Continental's proposal.
Current rates will remain in effect during the sus-
pension period.
