LAFAYETTE
By PEGGY WISE -- 864-2389
Home Extension Spring Festi-
val was attended by Vonda Lena
Clemens, Bernice Johnson, Edna
Rector, Blanche Stewart, Sophie
Hills, Gladys P y n e, Deloris
Springer, Barbara Owens, and
Peggy Wise from the Lafayette
area. As usual, there was plenty
to eat as happens at a pot-luck.
Wayne Roberts a n d Monlne
Strode of the County Extension
office were at the Festival. Spring
Festival is sort of a wind up of
the year for Extension groups
where County Committee mem-
bers are installed and all units
of study groups participate in
some way. Vi Robertson of Mc-
Minnville showed her slides of
Australia and New Zealand when
she attended the ACWW Trien-
nial World Conventio~ which
was held in Australia. 52 corm-
tries of the world were repre-
sented at this Convention. ACWW
--Affiliated Church Women of
the World. The Home Extension
organization belongs to this group
so may attend these meetings
that are held in a different coun-
try each year. This year the coun-
try picked for the next meeting
will be Kenya, Africa. The slides
showed some very beautiful areas
in Australia. Vi said she would
not go for "just a little ways" or
"It's not far" after a day or so
because by that, in Australia, it
could mean a mile or two and she
walked lots: of distance before
she started refusing to just walk
out ,and see a scenic spot that was

"just a little ways." The name
tag contest for YamhiLl county
was won by Sheridan with a
plastic map of Oregon similar to
the one Lafayette had made up.
The map had a few links of chain
hanging down to which was at-
tached .a plastic strip to put the
wearer's name. County Commit-
tee officers were installed by
Evelyn Treadway of Sheridan.
Barbara Owens of the Lafayette
Study group was installed as Vice
Chairman of County Committee.
Ken Bauer, Orville Hodgins,
and Everett and I went clam dig-
ging at Garibaldi on Saturday.
We went out in the .bay in a boat
to dig clams but had to work just
as hard to get a limit in clams
as we did along the shore.
Blanche Stewart attended the
District Meeting of the Pythian
Sisters which was held at the
Yamhill School Gym last week.
Over a hundred women attended
from all parts of the state.
The laundromat and People's
Market were vandalised over the
weekend as windows and walls
were covered with signs and
words sprayed on with spray
paint. The laundromat was one
of the few decent buildings in
that area.
A Committee for Better Law
Enforcement has been formed by
a number of citizens aid we are
supporting a return to a type of
law enforcement that wiU keep
some o.f the things that have
been happening in the last two
weeks in Lafayette from becom-
ing a common thing.
Health Department
Lists Tips On Bites
From Wild Animals
The Yamhill County Health De-
partment has had several calls in
the last few weeks regarding chil-
dren and adults being bitten by
squirrels, rats and other rodents.
The accompanying request from
these bite victims has been to
have the animals tested for rab-
ies.
Information gathered from the
files of the Oregon State Health
Division reveals that no' rodent
specimen tested in the State of
Oregon has ever been positive
for rabies. This evidence would
indicate that rabies infection
from the bite of a rodent is ex-
tremely unlikely.
As a precautionary measure,
instruct your children not to at-
tempt to pick up any wild animal,
such as bats, rats, squirrels, mice,
nutria, etc whether they appear
to be sick or health. Handling
any wild animal will surely re~
sult in a bite. Additionally be
sure to have all pet dogs and
cats vaccinated for r~bies.
Should an animal be suspected
of being rabid, the following ac-
tion should be taken:
1. Domestic dogs and cats
should be held in quarantine or
restraint for 10 days. If during
the restraint period they should
develop symptoms such as paraly-
sis, difficulty in swallowing, ex-
citation and/or repeated biting of
animate or inanimate objects, the
animal's head should be submit-
ted for rabies examination. Con-
sult a veterinarian prior to de-
struction of the animal.
2. Wild species such as bats,
coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and
skunks should be killed and their
heads submitted for rabies exam-
ination, if they have bitten a per-
son, livestock or a pet.
3. All specimens stvbmitted for
rabies examination should be
submitted through your local
Health Dept.
