According to the Dayton School Scene, a publication recently sent out by the school district, the total general fund budget for the 1982-83 school year will be $2,736,806, a 10.1% increase over 1981-82. Estimated tax rate will be $17.93 per $1000 assessed valuation, The Dayton Chamber of Commerce will meet Thurs- day, May 8. at 8 pm at the Dayton Fire Hall. Supt. Rich McCullough will discuss the proposed school budget and its economic impact on Dayton. down 40c from the current rate of $18.33. Funding has been reduced from $86,049 to $28,944, primarily due to a loss of federal funding. The Dayton Community and School Association will Mrs. Katherine Galer accompanied her brother, Walter Irwin, and nephew, Tim Ellenburger, to Boise, Idaho, Saturday to visit relatives. They also visited a nephew, Don Irwin, at Naps, Idaho. They were gone two days. Tuesday evening callers at the Bud Callahan home were Mrs. Claude Emmert and daughter Linda from Salem. Kroweldeen Club met last Wednesday at the home of Madeline Gell in McMinnville. Winners were Elizabeth Foster, Ann Budke and Myona Gray. Myona was a guest. The next meeting will be on Thursday at the of Orva Gubser. Refreshments were served the evening. A recent guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Verne Garrett was Mrs. Frances Hughes from McMinnville. Miss Charlotte Filer and sister, Mrs. Bernard Lip- pens, went to Newberg Saturday to meet a friend, Mrs. Mary Ruddick of Lake Oswego, for lunch. Mary formerly worked at Pacific University with Charlotte. A Tuesday afternoon caller at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Callahan was Carrie Young from McMinn- ville. be sponsoring a Kindergarten Roundup on May 11 at 7 pm in the Dayton Grade School Cafeteria. If you are, are know of a parent of a child who will be five years of age on or before November 15, 1982, you are invited to attend this program. Attendance by pupils is optional. Purpose of the meeting is to inform parents about curriculum, transportation, immunizations, pre-testing and special services. Registration packets will be issued during the meeting. If you have questions regarding the Kindergarten please call the school at 864-2217. Carnival at school Friday for computer program The Dayton Community and School Association will be sponsoring a carnival on May 7 at the Dayton High School Multi-Purpose room from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The proceeds from the carnival will be used to assist the district-wide computer education program. Everyone is invited to attend. Call 864-2318 or 864-3382 for more information. Council post open Applications will be accepted for the position of council person for the City of Dayton for the term expiring December31, 1982. These applications will be accepted until 4:30 pm June 7 at the Recorder's office in Dayton City Hall. The position is vacant following the acceptance of Council president Betty Damewood of the mayor's post. DAYTON STUDENT WINS SCHOLARSHIP The Catlin Gabel School has announced that six of its 48 seniors have been honored with local and national scholarships, among them Kim Crawford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Crawford of Dayton. She has received a Tektronix Scholarship, awarded t children of Tektronix employees. Graduation for the Catlin Gabel School seniors will be at 7 pm Saturday, June 12 in the Cabell Center for the Performing Arts, 8825 SW Barnes Road. Betty Damewood new Dayton mayor Betty Damewood was selected Monday evening, May 3, to serve as the new Dayton mayor, apparently the first woman to serve in that capacity in the city's history. Mrs. Damewood, who was council president, will finish out the unexpired term of Art Johnson to Dec. 31, 1982. Mr. Johnson resigned recently citing health reasons. Applications for the council position vacated by Mrs. Damewood will be taken until 4:30 pm June 7 at the recorder's office, Dayton City Hall, That term will expire Dec. 31, 1982. During the regular meeting, the Council discussed a proposed ordinance for licensing of bicycles within the city. As proposed, a. one-time licensing fee of $2.00 would be set and licensing would be mandatory. No action was taken pending discussion with the city attorney concerning an ordinance. Following a public hearing and discussion, the Council approved an ordinance establishing a flood hazard zone and to help in the prevention of flood damage. The council also discussed a storm drain map showing proposed storm drain lines on Church, 6th, 7th and 8th Sts. Decision was postponed to the June meeting until the city attorney was present, to make final determination on financing methods. Lowell Stevens reported to the Council that a vol- unteer group will pour a concrete floor and erect a roof covering on the band stand in the city park. •This is a project under the sponsorship of the Centennial Commission. Bids were opened on new shelving units for the city library. American Strevel of Portland was low bidder for five units at $639. The Council also approved payment of $8500 for the newly-acquired fire truck from Canby. The Council decided to hire four CETA summer youths to help in the community. Two will work in the city hall and two will be used in the public works department. The planning commission requested and the council approved a dead end sign to be placed on the corner of Main and 6th St. Mike Henry, city engineer, reported on progress of work at the sewer lagoon expansion project. Operating and maintenance manuals are being reviewed. A request from Continental Telephone Co. to use the bridge as a carrier for telephone lines was postponed by the utility company until next year. The Council also decided to drop a request for HCRS funds to develop the proposed park across the Yamhill River. The city had asked for $35,000 to be matched by an equal amount from the city. May Day festivities scheduled at school Tracy Lynn Kragerud and Calvin Chupp will preside as queen and king of the annual May Day festivities for the Dayton schools. Tracy is the daughter of Larry and Maureen Kragerud and Calvin is the son of Andrew and Dema Chupp. Chosen as freshmen princesses were Angels Bowlin and Carina Dunn. Jeffery Howard and Jerry Segundo are freshman princes. Sophomore princesses are Lisa May Henson and Heidi Clevenger. Christopher Lively and Robert Whitehead were selected as sophomore princes. Junior princesses .are Jennifer Stewart and Jean Sweeney. Junior princes are Gregory DeJager and Todd Smith. Debts Lynn Moncy and Robbyn Lee Derr were selected as princesses for the senior class with Eric Lively and Todd Bodnar as senior princes. Angle Whygle anti Julie Aleman will act as flower girls and Amos Hutchings and Martin Kragerud will be train bearers as part of the queen's attendants. Maypole dancers include Darla Morris, Jennifer Flint, Michelle Glaser, Deanna Greenfield, Lisa Haxton, Danetta Krier, Jamie Nalley, Sylvia Ramos, Shelley Sonderman, Carrie Storm, Kellie Torres, Jennifer Yount, Melissa Albright, Becky Bhone, DeEtte Conner, Trene Serna, and Sandy Mendenhall as alternate. Wendy Westover will act as M.C. for the May Day proaram, with music provided by the Dayton High School Stage Band, Swing Choir, Carol Heaston and Bruce Kendall. For the coronation, Karl Butman will be Herald and Anita Hutchison will be Bishop.
