~Pastor's Corner _~
Dear Pastor Skip,
When a couple marries how complete should the
severing qf their ties be with their parents?
I believe a good text to begin with would be Genesis
2:18, 22-24. These verses say "Then God said it is not
good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper
suitable for him. And the Lord God fashioned into a
woman the rib which he had taken from the man, and
brought her to the man. And the man said, this is now
hone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. She shall be
called Woman because she has been taken out of Man.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall become one
flesh.
These verses show that God has made man and
~n to be together a~nd that there is a definite
,et~llJ'ng of one's parents at marriage. Notice the three
verbs describing the man's relationship with his
parents and his wife. The three verbs are leave, cleave,
and become.
The Lord God places us with our parents in our
formative years. But as we mature our dependence
upon them gradually lessens until we are no longer a
child. We then step out on our own. When a couple
marries they come out from under the authority of their
parents and now are responsible for themselves.
In this leaving process God also recognizes that none
of us are truly independent. Thus he says the husband
and wife are to cleave. As this couple cleaves they

become a new authority base from which they make
their decisions. Finally the become one flesh. They give
totally of themselves to the other in the sexual union.
This demonstrates the completeness of the separation
from the parents' authority and the newfound relation-
ship within their marriage.
These verses show a complete severing of ties from
the parents, emotionally, financially, physically, and so
on. This new couple is now on their own, and are to
make decisions on their own. This does not mean
however a complete disregard for their parents. Our
parents are given to us by divine appointment and they
are given to us for a life time. Married couples should
work hard on maintaining good relationships with their
parents. There is much wisdom that can be gained from
them. So while the new married couple is no longer
under their parents' authority, they can still learn much
from them.

'Help Line' observes first
birthday with program
Yamhill County "Help Line" is celebrating its first
birthday with the initiation of 24-hour answering
service which began May 5.
Mona Casey, coordinator, says 'Help Line' began life
as 'Crisis Line' but the para-professional folk who man
the line will lend a listening ear to any situation or
problem, not just in crises, and we feel our new name is
more appropriate." She continues, "These volunteers
would like to be busier than they have been. There
must be a lot of lonely people who need this service,
and we're more than willing to talk with them."
A special birthday party for all volunteers will be held
in Room 31 at the Yamhill County Annex Saturday,
May 8. Cake and coffee will be shared at 5:30 and,
following a discussion period and presentation of cer-
tificates to volunteers, Mr. Bud Swanson, who is a
professional counselor for Alcoholics Anonymous, will
lecture and show a film.
'Help Line' telephone number is 472-4333. All types
of calls are accepted. Those who answer the line are
trained volunteers. They have access to vast amounts of
reference material and if a patron requests a specific
type of assistance, referrals can be made to other
agencies. All calls are confidential, and Mrs. Casey
hopes the people in Yamhill County who need a friend
will try calling 'Help Line.'
