Extension Service seeking
food education volunteers
OSU Extension Service is seeking volunteers inter-
ested in .helping families expand their food resources. The
Family .Food Education Volunteer program (formerly
known as Master Food Preservers) is scheduled in
McMilmville on Wednesdays, June 15, 22 and 29. Train-
ings are held from 9 am to 3 pm.
Volunteers must attend all three days of training, pass
a final exam and commit 20 hours of their time teaching
safe canning practices. Time can be given at local food
pantries with community gardens, at local farmer markets,
with youth groups and other local organizations and
groups. Interested adults and older youth are encouraged
to apply.
The emphasis of the training is canning fruits, vege-
tables and other foods safely at home. At a time when
food pantries have seen increasing requests for emergency
food boxes, canning fruits, vegetables and other foods at
home is one way to increase a family's food security.
For more information, volunteer position description
and application, contact Holly Berry, OSU Extension
Service at 503-588-5301, holly berry@orego xstate.edu or

City police, county sheriff's officers and Oregon State
Police joined with police agencies nationwide beginning
May 23 and continuing through Jul 5 tO encourage the
use of safety belts and child restraints. The goal is to save
lives.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death
and disability for all Americans age 1 through 34 years
old, according to the National Centers for Disease Con-
trol.
Drivers in Oregon may be ticketed not only for fail-
ure to wear safety belts themselves and passengers, but
also if they fail to require young people under the age of
16 to wear safety restraints or to properly restrain small
children in a child seat or booster seat.
Oregon laws requires all occupants of passenger ve-
hicles to "properly" use safety belts. This means that both
parts of a lap and shoulder belt system must be worn to-
gether, only one person per belt, and no placement of the
shoulder of the shoulder belt behind the back or under the
aim.
