Funeral services were held Saturday, June 7 for Rob-
ert O. Frederiksen of Dayton in the chapel of Macy & Son
Funeral Directors, McMiunville. Interment was in
Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.
Mr. Frederiksen died June 4, 2003 in his home. He
was 96.
He was born Dec. 5, 1906, in Cedarburg, Wis the
son of Johan George and Eugenia A. Whitenburg Fre-
deriksen. He was raised and educated in Cedarburg. He
worked on a farm at a young age. When he was 18, he
hitchhiked to the West Coast.
He was a veterinarian's assistant in Medford in the
1930s. He later worked as an aircraft assembler on the
Boeing B-17 until he was drafted into the Army in 1943.
He served in the K-9 Corps, training dogs for manhunts,
mine detection and as guard dogs. After completing his
military service, he moved to Los Gatos, Calif in 1945.
He and Esterine Pettigrew were married Oct. 22,
1945, in Los Gatos.
Mr. Frederiksen was one of the first three trainers for
the Guide Dogs for the Blind program. He left the pro-
gram in 1949 and moved to Mountain View, Calif. In
1950, he opened the Peninsula Dog Training School in
Mountain View, where he boarded and trained dogs, of-
fered obedience training and raised German shepherds.
Also an inventor, he held patents for two drinking foun-
tains for dogs, the Lick-A-Drink and Lixit fountains.
He retired in 1964 and moved to McMiunville where
he later grew blueberries at his rural home. He took oil
painting classes and, as a student, had won first place in
the Phil Sheridan Days art show.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Frederiksen of
Dayton and John Frederiksen of Forest Grove; a daughter,
Barbara Ann Frederiksen of Hubbard; three grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1984; three
brothers, John, Eugene and Horace; two sisters, Florence
Rainey and Helen Filtz; and a grandchild.

The Dayton High School girl's softball team won an-
other state championship after a 10-inning, three-hour
game Saturday against North Douglas. The 2A/1A cham-
pionship game was played at Portland's Erv Lind Sta-
dium.
Dayton was the only state baseball or softball cham-
pion to repeat this year. They won 5-2.

A memorial service for Ronald C. Miller of Dayton
was held Tuesday, June 10 in the Dayton Christian
Church. Rev. Kyle French officiated.
Private interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park,
McMinnville.
Mr. Miller died June 5, 2003, in Providence St. Vin-
cent Medical Center, Portland. He was 72.
He was born Sept. 25, 1930, in Racine, Wis the son
of Leon C. and Gertrude Sauter Miller.
He and Dorothy L. Umholtz were married Dec. 23,
1950, in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Mr. Miller moved from Crestline, Calif to Dayton
in 1964. He lived in McMinnville from 1971 to 1977,
when he moved to Gresham. He moved back to Dayton in
1990.
He received an honorary doctorate in ministry from
Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in 1987. He re-
tired in 1992 as director of maintenance at the seminary.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathy
Ediger and Mary Everett, both of Dayton, and Melinda
Miller of Salem; a son, Daniel Miller of Dayton; three
brothers, Gary Miller of McMinnville, James Miller of
Crestline, Calif and Richard Miller of Temecula, Calif.;
A sister, Sharon Mazenko of Martinez, Calif.; 19 grand-
children and seven great-grandchildren.

A Low Rider Cruise-In will be held on Fourth
at the Dayton City Park on Sunday, June 22 from 12 m
to 8 pm. A live hip hop show will be presented by Micro-
build Production and live music will be performed by
"Flashback".
A barbecue and family games including 3-point shoot
out, horse shoe playoff, 3-legged races, tricycle relay,
face painting and more are planned. Costs will be $1 for
each event. Vendors are welcome.

Former Dayton resident
nominated Poet of Year
Katherine Sims, a former resident of Dayton, has
been nominated Poet of the Year for 2003. She has been
invited to attend the 2003 International Poets Convention
and Symposium in Washington, D.C. She will be for-
mally inducted in August as an International Poet of Merit
and become an Honored Member of their Society for
2003. She submitted a poem called "Forever" and is being
published in the book of poetry called Patterns of Life. It
will also be included in a spoken poetry CD set called The
Second of Poetry. She is a resident of Portland.
