LAFAYETTE
By PEGGY WISE -- 864-2389
It was warm enough to suit
heat loving people over the week-
end. The Wise family and the Or-
ville Hodgins family of Lafayette
and the Dale Hodgins' of Amity
took off for a weekend over on
the Metolins River. We eamp(~d
at Bridge 99 jug a stone's throw
from the fast moving stream. As
usual, the river rushed by and
there were many small pine squir-
rels dashing back and forth and
people. We waited for someone to
pull out so we could get a camp-
ing spot. The camp spot next to
us changed occupants three times
in the short time we were there.
Those who wanted to fish could
find a place to fish but hikers
and large dogs were somewhat
of a problem. Not much was be-
ing caught. The fish up at the
Camp Sherman bridge wouldn't
even eat the bread we threw into
the water. The weather was
lovely -- it did cloud up Satur-
day afternoon and acted like it
might rain but Sunday as we
started home it was a "blue-bird"
day and the mountains in the
area were so clearly seen that
they looked like they were paint-
ed on the blue sky. The rhodo-
dendrons were in full bloom and
I saw trillium ISles blooming thru
the dirt covered snow at the high-
est altitude.
Blanche Stewart visited the
home of Lettie Hyatt in Clatska-
nie for three days last week. She
didn't do any fishing as the Co-
lumbia is closed to salmon and
that's about the time a person
would catch one and have to toss
it back.
There were 25 people who vot-
ed on the school issue Tuesday
here at the Lafayette City Hall
District 2,0 out of McMinnville
had only four voters show up.
City Recorder Blanche William-
son is recuperating at home after
spending several days in the hos-
pital with pneumonia. Gladys
Bonneville is filling in at city hall
until Mrs. WilUamson can return
to work.
Mr. Walter Gamel is now work-
ing for the Lafayette City Main-
tenance Dept., replacing /tim
Reed.
Agnes Merrill and son Merlin
and Arlie Courtney of McMinn-
ville drove up the Columbia riv-
er on the Washington side to vis-
it the MaWs Hill Museum. They
crossed the river and returned
on the Oregon side. It was real
windy but lovely weather.
People's Market was burglar-
ized on Monday night sometime
after 2 a.m~ The store was entered
from the roof and cigarettes and
change were stolen. The ease is
under investigation.
