Weatherization
Funds for Elderly
Still Available
There's plenty of money left for
senior citizens who haven't used
their state weatherization refund
vouchers, says John J. Lobdell,
Director of the Oregon Dept. of
Revenue. The 1977 legislature ap-
propriated $4 million to help low
income seniors weatherize their
homes. Over $3.3 million, or 84
percent of the appropriation re-
mains unspent.

Task Force Votes
mailed over 65,000 vouchers to
senior citizens who meet the pro- Tax Cred|t For

gram requirements. The voucher is
worth up to $300 for specific kinds
of weatherization work. To claim
the refund, homeowners must re-
turn the completed voucher to the
department with proof of weather-
ization expenses (receipts, work
orders, cancelled checks). To date,
the department has issued almost
2,500 refunds averaging $186. The
department will issue refunds until
Jan. 1, 1980, or whenever the ap-
propriation funds out, if earlier.
The weatherization refund pro-
gram is open to persons who meet
these qualifications:
--Were 60 or older on Jan. 1, 1977
--Had 1976 household income of
less than $7,500
The interim Task Force on Ener-
gy of the Oregon Legislature voted
to improve the home weatheriza-
tion tax credit laws according to
Representative Bill Rutherford, (R-
Lafayette), Task Force member and
chief sponsor of the bill in the last
session.
Specific improvements recom-
mended by the Task Force were
expansion to include mobile
homes, making the credit available
to those who weatherized after
January 1, 1977 and recommending
eliminating the inspection require-
ment except for safety.

Special Spanish
And Simplified
Driver Manuals
Two "special edition" drivers
manuals are now available to help
people studying for an Oregon
driver's license.
A spanish language manual has
been published by the Motor Ve-
hicles Division and is now available
at DMV field offices in limited
quantities.
A simplified version of the man-
ual has also been developed by a
Corvallis woman, Virginia Hoeye,
to help people with reading prob-
lems prepare for the state s license
examination. Although this publi-
cation was not published by the
state, it has been checked by the
Motor Vehicles Division for accur-
acy.
The simplified version is avail-
able through Oregon Literacy
Councils and may also be pur-
chased from the New Reader's
Bookstore, 520 SW 3rd, Portland,
Oregon.

Evelyn Lenderink
Mrs. Evelyn Lenderink left for
Ocean Springs, Miss., March 22, to
visit her daughter, Mr. and Mrs.
Don Acree. The following Sunday
was Easter Sunday and they at-
tended early Sunrise Services
which were held on the beach of
Biloxi Bay which runs into the Gulf
of Mexico. It was chilly at six
o'clock but the sunrise and services
were so beautiful we didn't mind,
she says.
The first two weeks of April she
spent in Wauchida, Florida, visit-
ing her sister, Mrs. Malinda

Ocean Springs. While there she
saw the Blessing of the Shrimp
Boat Fleet and learned how to go
crabbing. We did a lot of canning
and preserving, she says. Their
first garden has all been harvested
and plowed under. They have
several very poisonous snakes so
they always wore boots when walk-
ing in the garden and yard. I
learned to enjoy all sea food and
Gumbo. I enjoyed my vacation very
much but was very glad to get back
to Oregon where it is cool. Since
June 1 the temperatures were in
the upper 90 degrees and very
