Alaska Unsalted
Life in the land of the midnight sun may not be what
it was in the days of sourdough prospectors and grizzled
trappers, but former Alaska resident and current Florida
write Bill Miles captures a vivid sampling of America's
40th state with his newly released short story collection,
"Alaska Unsalted: Tales of Life and Death on the Last
Frontier."
With subjects ranging from whale hunts to gay charity
balls, and with settings wandering from funeral parlors to
bingo halls, the eight stories in this book add up to a no-
ble collection of memorable characters and their struggles.
Miles' work has been compared to Bret Harm and
Jack London and like London, Miles spent time heeding
the call of the wild in distant lands before settling down in
the lower forty-eight. During a 35 year stint spent living
in either Alaska or Antarctica, for example, he worked at
jobs ranging from truck driver and bartender to free lance
write and legislator. He also has been a sky-diver, snow-
mobile racer, boxer and pilot. All of these experiences
make his descriptionn of life in Alaska vivid and realistic.
"Alaska Unsalted, Tales of Life and Death on the Last
Frontier", is an interesting and thought-provoking set of
short stories.
Published by Bear Creek Press of Wallowa, Oregon,
the book is available for $10.95 at bookstores throughout
the region or from Bear Creek Press at 1-800-355-2554 or
