Public hearing set on
low-income housing
The Dayton City Council Monday evening, Aug. 3rd
will hold a public hearing at 7:30 pm on a site-design
review for a controversial apartment complex proposed
for Dayton.
Wednesday, however, the Dayton mayor received a
c~py'of a letter from the Department of Housing and
Urban Development written to the Farmers Home
Administration. The letter reads, in part: "At the time
of receipt (May 13, 1981) of your application for the
subject project, there was in effect a Housing Assist-
ance Plan (HAP) for Yamhill County which included the
City of Dayton. Our records show that this proposal for
16 nonelderly units would exceed the three-year goals
of the Yamhill County Housing Assistance Plan; and,
therefore, the proposal is unapprovable at this time.
City officials have decided to continue with the public
hearing set for Monday evening to receive input from
citizens of the community concerning the project.
The project is being planned by the Yamhill County
Housing Authority for low-income families. The project"
has been under fire by city officials and local residents
who feel the city has adequate housing and the project
will attract more low-income residents to the com-
munity.
An informal group, spearheaded by Daraline Falcon
of Dayton, has been formed to try to block the
construction, which was granted reluctant approval by
the Dayton City Planning Commission.
Seniors sponsor cake
walk at Old Timers Picnic
By Froida Hodgecock
The Seniors of the Golden Age Group sponsored a
cake walk on Sunday, July 26 at the Old Timers picnic
in Dayton.
The cake walk was held in front of Hagan-Hamilton
Insurance office on the sidewalk, also loaned us the use
of their office to put our cakes inside. It was a very hot
day and the building really helped to keep them from
the sun. We wish to thank them for their generosity in
loaning us this space for the afternoon.
The cake walk began at 2 pm with the beautiful music
of Deeward and Mac Davis on the guitar and marimba
and we thank you very much Bud and Mae. Also a
thank you to every person who donated a cake. There
were some "yummy" looking cakes donated.
We also received donations of money from some
instead of a cake and thank each and everyone for all
their help and support.
The money will go toward our fund to help buy floor
covering for the fire hall dining room. We made
approximately !160 on our cake walk, and I must say it
was hot, but fun and especially the young people really
enjoyed the cake walk and was fun for all ages.
On July 17, we honored birthdays for July with ice
cream and cake. Those present having July birthdays
were Curt Douglas, Robin Welch, Lucille Kilgore and
John Huntington, Buna Remme and Edith May. May
more "Happy Birthdays."
The health nurse, Becky Sipp, is with us again on
Tuesdays, following her vacation. On Tuesday, the
28th, a "Keep Well" clinic was held at the fire hall.
On Friday evening, Lonell Golden, an insurance
broker, spoke to the seniors about Senior Security, a
comprehensive mediccare supplement program, and
basic things seniors should know. He is with Pacific
Insurance Assn., from a Portland office, also Investors
Insurance Corp., Portland. It was very informative.
Seniors, the dinner at Lafayette Meal Center on
Saturday, will start early because of the parade and
Heritage Days celebration, so be ready a little early for
the van. The menu for Dayton, Friday, July 31st will be
fish, hash browns, a vegetable, cole slaw, lemon
pudding, corn bread, coffee, milk or tea. See you
Friday.
