To the Editor: Recently the U.S..National Bank ran a contest for young people to write an essay entitled "How to Get Oregon's Economy Back on Track". The prize was to be Bank Manager for a day and have his or her essay entered in a statewide contest. The deadline was July 2nd. My daughter was quite excited about this, and she entered at the Dayton, Oregon Branch. The winner was to be notified by July 9th. Since she hadn't heard anything by that date, we watched the Dayton Tribune for the announcement of the winner's name. No infor- mation was published so on July 29 I called the bank to find out who won. I was informed that there were only two entries so they had trhown them out! Their reasoning was that since there wasn't more response, there was no reason for judging between these two. Alas, there were only four entries in all of Yamhill County, two in Dayton, one in Newberg, and he thought the other one was from Sheridan. So what did these bank managers decide? Did they decide that these were four diligent young people who deserved a chance? No, they decided that there wasn't enough response in Yamhill County so they threw out their essays! In case you think I'm using hard words, I asked the manager in Dayton what he did with them; did he throw them out? His answer? Yes, Ma'am. 1 can hardly believe it. Needless to say, I was shocked. My reason for writing is that I think this is very unfair to the young people who were eager and responsive to the challenge of thinking of ways to put Oregon's economy back on track. ltheir They should have judged between the two entries in Dayton, and the other two banks, with only one entrant each, should have given that one person the local prize. He or she won because everyone else was not in- terested or didn't know about it. Consequently, it was a win by default. Now all of these young people have lost out on the chance to be in the big statewide contest. This was a very poor decision on the park of the U.S. National Bank managers in Yamhiil County. My daughter didn't get a letter explaining what had happened nor even an apology. I had to call the bank to find out! Would they have done this to adults? Why do people treat children as if they are nonentities? There are four young people in Yamhill County who are very disappointed. Why should they be punished because no one else entered or because they don't live in the big city where there was more response? In the future it would be wise for the U.S. National Bank, or anyone else, when running a contest to follow through on their promises. This isn't a good example for any of our young people when adults don't keep word. Sincerely, Mrs. Wm. H. Entler Rt. 2, Box 217C Dayton, Or. 97114 864-2208 Hopewell SDA Church Elder Robert Morris spoke during church hour on July 31st. Special music was given by Chuck Keightley and daughter Janet. Going to church does not make you a Christian anymore than standing in a garage makes you a car. There are Christians who unfortunately do not go to church• .There are also people who regularly go to church but who are not Christians. A Christian is one who has put their faith in Jesus Christ. A Christian is one who has realized their sinfulness, recognized Christ's death on the cross for them, and by faith received His forgiveness. Eph. 2:89 tell us that it is totally by faith and not by any work of our own that we are saved and become a Christian. Now, while going to church does not make a person a Christian, every Christian should regularly attend church• Not to be saved but because we are saved. Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to forsake our assembling together• Church is a time of corporate worship, fellowship and instruction that is important to the complete growth of a Christian. Remember going to church does not make you a Christian, but every Christian belongs in a church. lf you have a question for Pastor Skip mail it to: Pa~tor's Corner First Baptist Church f P.
