+- ndbre; king held for fire hall construction Members of the Dayton Rural Fire District Board, city officials, volunteer firefighters and their families and friends all watched as a groundbreaking ceremony for a new fire hall was held last Wednesday, August 10. The new structure will be on Ferry Street and is the culmina- tion of several years of planning by members of the de- partment. Completion of the building is expected to be about April of 2006 at a cost of $1.6 million. The land was pur- chased three years ago and Fire Chief Bret Putman said plans for the building began on a paper napkin about two years ago. There was input from nearly all the members of the department and their ideas and suggestions were then turned over to an architect who finalized the plans, he said. The Dayton Rural Fire District covers approximately 80 square miles and there are two substations, one at Hopewell and one at Grand Island. Residents of the city of Dayton pay taxes into the Dayton Rural Fire District. The district has one rescue unit, one vehicle to pro- vide air to fill air tanks on the scene, one engine to fight brush fires, two tenders and five fire trucks. There are 40 firefighters, many of whom are also qualified as first-aid providers for emergency accidents and illnesses. Dayton mayors project By "Jo" Windish The 125th celebration committee has undertaken a project to locate the names and terms of service for eyer mayor dating back to 1880 when Dayton was incorpo- rated. During the October 15th concert celebration we plan to honor their public service. We are also looking for pictures. If family members could come forward and con- tact us with that information it would spare us many hours of time looking for these valuable individuals. Contac Kelly I-laverkate at 503-864-3214 or Jo Windish 503-864-2168. Thanks for the help!
