OF HEALTH
Tips Given For
Children's Safety
The Federal Bureau of Investi-
gation has issued some crime re-
sistance rules to help keep young-
sters safe.
William H. Webster, Director,
says, "Wanting to protect our chil-
dren is part of loving them. Crime
resistance is part of protecting
them. Don't throw this message
away keep it where you will see
it -- pass it on to other parents."
Some of the basic rules sug-
gested are:
• The old rule about never tak-
ing candy from a stranger is still
a good rule -- tell them not to take
candy, a ride or even a walk with a
stranger tell them whey[
• Tell them never admit to being
home alone -- on the phone or to
someone at the door.
• Give the school instructions
only to release your children to the
people you have designated in
writing -- in case of emergency.
• Locate and point out "block
parent" or similar homes in the
neighborhood or along the route to
school to your children and explain
the meaning of such refuges.
• Select one or two neighbors
who will provide sanctuary for
children should any threat or em-
ergency arise while you are away
from them. Provide that neighbor
with phone numbers where you can
usually be reached. Offer to do the
same for those neighbors.
• Report suspicious individuals
or vehicles lurking in areas where
children play to the police. Obtain
license numbers and descriptions
whenever possible.

PUBLIC FORUM
To the Editor:
A short time ago the people in
the area voiced their disapproval of
helicopter noise. I have to agree
that the throb and clatter of heli-
copters is one of the most objec-
tionable noises in the country.
Helicopters are banned in various
sectors of the United States, be-
continually zips back and forth
across the skies of the county,
creating another obnoxious noise in
the area, plus contaminating the air
with its jet fuel.
The loud startups at the Mc-
Minnville airport by the jet plane
(there were times at midnight, 1
am, and 7 am) are indications that
cause of its disturbing effects
the population. The people of Sa-
lem complained a few years ago
about the atrocious noise of heli-
copters flying continuously over
their city. The flights were
stopped.
Another objectionable noise is
being introduced to Yamhiil
county. It is thesound of a jet plane"
from the McMinnville airport that

Longest Battles
One of the longest wars in
history was the one between
England and France that was
waged, on and off, between
1337 and 1453. It was known
as the Hundred Years' War
and was fought because each
side claimed a bit of territory
in what is now northwest
France.

Millions of Americans are
poisoned by foods prepared
at home and eaten at
picnics, work or school. The
National Sanitation Founda-
tion (NSF) notes that two
familiesof bacteria are
the principal villains--sal-
monella and staphylococci
("staph"). The sickness may
only last a day or two
and be mistakenly blamed
on a "bug," a "virus" or on
"indigestion."
Mayonnaise, salad dres-
sing, egg sauces and custards
need to be kept cold until
just before eating. They are
excellent culture mediums
in which microbes can
multiply and produce in-
testinal poisons known as
enterotoxins.
NSF scientists offer these
suggestions :
1. Do not let foods con-
taining moisture or fat stand
around for long periods of
time in a warm kitchen.
2. Sandwiches, salads and
desserts intendedfor picnics
or other away-from-home
consumption should be
stored in a refrigerator until

desires. At least it seems to me,
their complacency in rendering this
noise and air pollution upon the
people of this area is a lot of gall at
its utmost.
The Yamhili county commission-
ers should set up and enforce a
Noise and Air Pollution Abatement
Commission to stop this and other
unnecessary, irritating invations of
the people's serenity in,this area.

just before leaving. The
same rule applies to meats
that are to be cooked at a
picnic.
3. Crrry picnic meals in a
portable food chest which
contains ice or frozen
freezer cans.
4. When possible, store
brown bag lunches in a
refrigerator at school or
work until just before lunch.
5. Never eat food from a
bulging can or a food con-
tainer that squirts upon
opening. The contents may
contain C. botulinum, the
cause of botulism, and dead-
liest of all food poisons.
6. Observe this rule about
suspicious foods: "When in
