birthday
Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005 marked the end of the
year-long celebration of Dayton's founding. During the
last few months, many events have been held, not only in
Dayton, but at the Oregon State Capitol to mark the
birthday of one of the oldest cities in the state.
'Jo' Windish, former Dayton mayor, originated
the idea to observe the city's birthday, andaided by a
Celebration Committee of Pedro Beltran, Mark Culbert-
son, Linda Garcia, Kelly Haverkate, Penny Kennen', Kyle
Kruchok, Trim Ma quez; Veronica Marquez, Katie
Paysinger, Mark Williams, Pete Windish,'T ,alitha Zeliner
and many others, came up with uniqu6 .ways to hold a
birthday celebration for a community. Every &ing from
essay contests at the school, fo .rmation of a conununity
chorus and band, performances at the state capitol, living
history performances at the Day n Cemetery, and others
events were held during the past year.
A Victorian tea, the recognition of former may-
ors and a final birthday celebration at the Dayton High
School, complete with birthday cakes, and music brought
the year to a grand finale.
During the evening performances, Ma yor Jackie
Brons introduced the former mayors who were present to
the audience in the high school gym and gave a brief his-
tory and some interesting footnotes about the city.
City Administrator Sue Hollis recognized all the
"heroes" that help make the U.S. and the community
what it is today. These included those serving in the mili-
tary, those who serve in fire departments, medical assis-
tants, and police and those who volunteer their time and
efforts to help make the community a unique place to live
and raise their families.
'Jo' Windish expressed ppreciation to all the
committee members and others who helped make the
"birthday year" one for everyone to remember.
