-- THE DAYTON TRIBUNE, DAYTON, OREGON --- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1973
Geodetic Survey Of
Local Area Finished
The federal government has
completed an eight-month $300,-
000 geodetic survey of 1660
square miles in the Mid-Willam-
ette Valley of Oregon.
The extensive survey was car-
ried out by the National Geodet-
ic Survey, an agency of the Com-
m e r c e Department's National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin-
istration, in cooperation with the
Mid-Willamette Valley Council of
Governments. The survey covered
parts of Marion, ~olk and Yamr
hill counties, including the com-
munities of Dallas~ McMinnville,
Dayton, Lafayette, Yamhill, Sa-
lem and Stayton.
A geodetic survey is a preciser
survey which provides the basis
for determining land boundaries,
mapping natural resotlrces, and
aligning highways and other pub-
lic utilities. The measurements
take into consideration the curva-
ture of the earth.
A 20-man field party headed
by Lowell D. Fair of Albuquer-
que, New Mexico, conducted the
throughout the area. The geogra-
phic positions will provide start-
ing data for surveyors and engin-
eers which will enable them to
carry out their work more accu-
rately.
Observations were made at
night when atmospheric disturb-
ance is at a minimum. A laser in-
strument made it possible to
hold distance errors to less than
one inch in 10 miles. Distance
was determined by computing
the time taken for a laser light
pulse to travel from the instru-
ment to a set of mirrors at anoth-
er site and return. Temperature,
pressure and humidity measure-
ments were included in the com-
putations to correct for atmos-
pheric distortion.
Bronze rrmrkers pinpoint the
surveyed sites. Surveyors and en-
gineers can obtain the latitude
anl longitude and other data re-
quired for surveys from the Na-
tional Geodetic Survey (C18),
Rockville, Md. 20852.

Snow and cold surrounds out
Willamette Valley. The Everett
Wises traveled to Tokeland, Wn
to the home of the Clarence Bush-
hells over the weekend. There
was snow at the coast towns of
Grayland and Westport, Wn. On
they way home there was snow,
sunshine, hail and thunder and
lightning and they had to come
south along 101 to Hebo to cross
the coast range without chains.
Orville Hodgins was honored
Thursday night with a beautiful
birthday cake. Mr. and bits. E.
Wise were guests at the Hodgins
home for the cake and ice cream.
Saturday guests at the home
of Orville Hodgins were Dale
Debhie from Amity. The men
went over on the Trask to try
their luck at salmon fishing.
There were lots of fishermen and
some salmon but they didn't con-
nect with one that they could
bring home.
Mayor Edwina Meitzen and
Bista Park at Salon1 on Saturday
morning and traveled down the
river and up the Yamhill to the
park. They were to stay Saturday
evening on Windsor Island and
come on up to the Lafayette
Locks by Sunday evening, arriv-
ing there between 3:30 and 5 p.m.
They got separated and part of
them spent the night on Grand
Island and part of them spent the
night at Wheatland. Those on the
island were soaked by rain while
those at Wheatland spent a dry
evening. Mr. and Mrs. McCune
and many other distinguished
visitors were at the Park to meet
the canoeists on Sunday. Have
you visited our Yamhill County
MusEum in Lafayette? It is now
open only on Friday and Satur-
day.
