Pastor's Corner
Dear Pastor Skip,
In John chapter thirteen Jesus washes the disciples'
feet and then says "You also ought to wash one
another's feet. '" Why don't many churches practice this
today?
When we look at this verse we must not take it out of
its surrounding context. We also need to be mindful of
the cultural significance of foot washing. When a
person arrived at a banquet a servant was to always
wash their feet. This was never to be done by the
master but always by a servant. In the preceding verses
Jesus and His disciples are about to partake of the
Lord's supper and none of them is willing to be the foot
washer. Thus Jesus their Teacher and Lord does this.
The point Jesus is trying to make is not that we are to
wash one another's feet. His lesson is that we are to be
one another's servants.
Jesus is not looking to outward conformity to a ritual.
He is desiring an inner change whereby we lay aside
our pride and serve one another. In verse 15 Jesus
continued and said "For I have given you an example
that you also should do as l did to you." The example
He left was not to wash feet but to become a servant to
others. If Jesus our Teacher and Lord served us we also
should serve one another. Foot washing was just a
mode that Jesus used to teach this lesson.

Thanksgiving thought. Plans were made for a Christ-
mas potluck in December. Visiting filled the remainder
of the afternoon.
