PAGE4--THE DAYTON TRIBUNE-- DAYTON, 0REGON-- THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 23, 1978 Oregon Wheat Commission Plans Recipe Contest A search has started in Oregon for "a product that will be a symbol of Oregon wheat production", ac- cording to Frank Tubbs, Adams wheat farmer and chairman of the Oregon Wheat Commission. Oregon wheat growers produce predominantly a class of soft white wheat that is used for making fine pastry products such as cakes, cookies and pastry flour. About 80% of Oregon's wheat is exported to Asian countries where it makes various specialty products such as noodles, sponge cakes, and un- leavened bread products. "In the United States", said Tubbs, "we use our Oregon wheat generally for pastry products. It is only fitting that we call our contest an "Oregon S'Wheat Roll" con- test". Original recipes are sought, ac- cording to Mrs. Helene Holcomb, staff member of the Oregon Wheat Commission. She said that any recipe can be submitted for the contest as long as it uses wheat SUBSCRIBE NOW For Less Than 6c A week Keep Up With What's Happening in Your Area NAME ................................................ Judging of the contest will be by professional home economists se- lected by Ivan Packard, adminis- trator of the Oregon Wheat Com- mission. Recipes will be judged on creativity, good product use, prac- ticality, texture, flavor, attractive- ness, completeness and clarity. Six finalists will be chosen and participate in a bake-off to be held in Portland. Expenses of the final- ists will be paid for the bake-off. The date of the bake-off has not been announced. Prizes for the "S'Wheat Roll" winner will be $100 and a silver tray for the first place winner, second prize will be $75 with third prize being $50. Fourth, fifth, and sixth prizes will be $25. Contest deadline is January 31, 1979. Entries are to be mailed to the "S'Wheat Roll Contest", Ore- gon Wheat Commission, P. O. Box 400, Pendleton, Oregon 97801. Full information and contest rules are also available at the same address. "This is an original promotion", said Tubbs. "Oregon produces some of the best pastry flour in the world, we have some pretty good cooks at home, and we need to tell more people about it. We certainly encourage wide participation in this original S'Wheat Roll con- test".
